I thought I'd take a minute to share some thoughts about my new daily beater watch - not a G-Shock, but related being in the Pathfinder (Pro Trek) series. For the price point, at sub-fifty, I think this is the best feature to cost ratio product currently offered by Casio. Appearance The AMW-701 is a fairly heavy watch, being constructed of a generous single worked chunk of steel, water resistant to 100M. The model I chose comes with a light tan double layer nylon band with stainless steel buckle. The sides of the watch are finished to a mirror sheen, the top brushed for a more rugged appearance. I especially like the antique style, ridged 'pusher guards' the buttons are mounted in.

The dial is crisp and legible beneath the ample thickness of the mineral crystal, easily seen in low light conditions without use of the backlight LEDs. The cutaway digital readout filling the bottom quarter of the screen is tastefully inset and pleasingly highlighted with backing colors that match the theme of this watch; the hunting theme is the watch as far as appearances go, the outside bezel being a non-functional but aesthtically pleasing rendition of the standard compass. Overall, this is an understated, though subtly attractive timepiece. Function Boasting the usual standard features, this offers three alarms, one of which can be set to snooze. All of the alarms can be set to daily, monthly, or 1 month daily configurations. The alarm is not as loud or shrill as the standard Casio alarm, but still ample to wake you from a nap. Present also are the standard stopwatch, 24hr repeatable countdown timer, a hand setting mode, a dual time mode, and a moon phase/hunting mode.

The watch is powered by a CR2025 to obtain a 10 year battery life - no worries about the CTL-1616 or recharging it. The buttons give a nice click when pressed and don't emit a sound if you enable the 'mute' feature; they're also very springy and return to their fully protruded positions rapidly and with no stickiness I've noted on some Casios. The LED is a pleasingly low-light yellow that adequately illuminates the face of the watch, again in line with the hunting theme - a dim, dark, glow. Overall, fairly standard, tried and true basic functions with a nice moon phase mode thrown in - more than adequate. Conclusion (Likes & Gripes) There's not much to gripe about with this watch. For less than $50, it'll be difficult to locate another 100M water resistant, solidly constructed watch with similar features and reliability.

A few minor concerns would be the crystal having no protection by the bezel, making it easy to smack against things, but again, it's fairly thick and my entertainment activities are more along the lines of outdoorsman than motorcross, so it'll usually be covered by a jacket or gloves anyway. Other than that, I can't think of a single bad point to this thing. One of the first things people notice about this watch is that there's no crown. It reminds me of the Citizen Navihawk, both in appearance and function.

The analog hands are linked to the digital time, but not directly. Specifically, the hands move every twenty seconds, keyed to the seconds indicator on the digital display - the time always matches, and the hands move precisely on the second unlike in other watches where you can have an analog movement completely out of synce with the digital. That means for those of you who want the watch five minutes fast, you can do that, setting the analog portion five minutes fast, leaving the digital portion on the correct time - the analog will move in lockstep precisely five minutes ahead of digital time. The analog mechanism appears to be constructed of a self-lubricating long-life plastic, making it extremely light and well protected against shocks and jarring. They've made enough G-Shock movements with this mechanism that it appears other lines are starting to benefit as well. Bottom line, a great looking and trouble free watch for very little cash.
